View overlooking Sidmouth, Devon, UK. Sidmouth is a small coastal town in East Devon, on the main road between Exeter and the small town of Lyme Regis on the border of Dorset. Sidmouth was documented as Sedemuda in the Domesday book and lies at the base of the valley, protected from the weather by the sandstone cliffs. The River Sid passes over the pebbles on the beach into the sea, which was once a harbour. In the fifteenth century Sidmouth was subject to the weather, after a long spell of stormy weather, there was a devastating land loss from the cliffs above, this caused the harbour to be blocked up. The town started to become popular with the upper classes when the Napoleonic wars prevented people taking holidays in Europe and stayed a favorite town for many years. |
